Cast announced for Oscar Wilde’s The Selfish Giant

The new folk musical adaptation of the classic children’s story by Wilde has been written by Ivor Novello award-winning composer Guy Chambers, and premiers at the Royal & Derngate on April 4 2018 as part of the venue’s Made In Northampton season.

Famous for creating hits for Kylie Minogue and Rufus Wainwright, and behind some of Robbie Williams’ biggest hits like Angels and Let Me Entertain You, Chambers has written the show in co-production with Classic Spring.

This classic story tells of the Selfish Giant who has a beautiful garden but won’t let any of the children play in it. Winter comes and never leaves, until the power of love brings Spring and joy into the Giant’s garden and his heart.

The cast has recently been confirmed: Jeff Nicholson (Sweeny Todd – ENO, Urinetown – Apollo Theatre) as the Giant; Scott Sutcliffe (The Book of Mormon, Thoroughly Modern Millie), Jacob Fisher (The Addams Family) and Olly Dobson (Bat Out of Hell, Matilda) all play Boy. Laila Zaidi (Starlight Express, West Side Story) plays Hail. Rose Shalloo (Fiddler on the Roof) plays Charlie. Izuka Hoyle, winner of the Stephen Sondheim Society ‘Student Performer of the Year’ Award last year, plays Little Boy. Natasha Cottriall (Beautiful – Aldwych Theatre, Into The Woods – Royal Exchange Manchester) and Laura Sillett (A Night at the Oscars – Upstairs at the Gatehouse) narrate.

The Selfish Giant is directed by Bill Buckhurst, who won multiple awards for his production of Sweeney Todd, which is currently playing in New York. It will be designed by Simon Kenny (Sweeney Todd) and choreographed by Imogen Knight (Amadeus). After opening in Northampton, The Selfish Giant transfers to the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End, as part of Classic Spring’s Oscar Wilde Season.
