On Stage Northants

Welcome to our very first blog post!

On Stage Northants is a brand new site dedicated to the amazing array of theatre, film and comedy being produced across Northamptonshire. Here, founder Becki talks about why she decided to set up On Stage Northants

When I moved here to Northampton in December 2016 I wasn’t really sure what to think of the place. I’d spent my whole life in Birmingham, a city I am fiercely proud of, and Northampton seemed to be so different! It was strange coming from a City that is so concentrated on the centre when Northampton feels like bundles of communities growing together around the Town Centre, rather than branches leading out from the middle. The communities here feel organic, and grounded. Which is where things like local Am Dram groups come in to their own.

Back in Brum, I’d worked in a theatre for nearly a decade but never really been involved with the acting or producing side of things. So when we arrived in Duston I decided to email the Duston Players, offering up my time and my photography experience, in order to keep in touch with the theatrical world. Somehow I ended up performing in their last production – and I had the most amazing time! But I also took on the challenge of Marketing the group, and the show – and it dawned on me how little there is out there to help promote and cherish these amazing community theatre groups.

I could not get anyone to review our performance. No one. And I wondered why.

Northampton not only has this amazing community theatre scene, but a growing film scene, and an amazing comedy scene. Why is this not being celebrated, and shouted about from the roof tops?

I might be new here to Northampton, but I feel like I can do something to help. That’s why I decided to start On Stage Northants – a means of promoting and singing the praises of all of the amazing creativity there is to experience in and around Northampton.

A means of making sure that the folks who work hard to put on shows for their local communities get their show talked about and reviewed.

A means of making the most of the brilliant comedians who take to the open-mic nights, the pub comedy nights and even to the big stage at the Royal and Derngate.

And a means of getting the news out there about brilliant projects like Screen Northants, who do stunning work for young people, as well as doing wonders for local film makers.

On Stage Northants is designed to be a collaborative site – putting together those of a similar mindset, those who want to be involved with the creative industries across the county. It will not only feature reviews from all ends of the theatre scale, but interviews with local actors, directors and performers, news features about upcoming projects and information about how you can get involved.

Northampton is a town bursting with creative talent – it’s time to start shouting about it!

If you’d like to get involved with On Stage Northants we are looking to build a team of reviewers and writers. Please get in touch with us at editor@onstagenorthants.co.uk
